We are currently seeking a Safety Coordinator to join our Human Resources department in a permanent, full-time role. The Safety Coordinator is responsible for the coordination and support of all safety-related functions within all departments of VistaCare Communications and its subsidiaries. The Safety Coordinator plays a key role in ensuring effective implementation of company safety programs and compliance with relevant Occupational Health & Safety regulation.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

Safety Program

  • Actively works toward continuous improvement of policies, processes and procedures related to Occupational Health & Safety.
  • Compliance auditing for required operational safety documentation
  • Conducting field inspections of active work sites; conducting pre-work hazard analysis on large jobs as required
  • Completing annual COR audit; obtaining inter-provincial approvals as required
  • Assists with the development and preparation of safety communications
  • Conduct safety training courses as needed
  • Participate in JOHSC meetings and other committees / meetings as necessary
  • Promote safety culture

Safety Pre-qualifications

  • Completes pre-qualifications as required for our customers and clients; provides annual updates as requested by clients and customers
  • Reviews pre-qualifications completed by our subcontractors and makes recommendations to the Safety Officer for approval or denial based on their submissions
  • Tracks employee approvals for all subcontractors to ensure compliance with company policy on safety training

Incidents

  • Point of contact for all incidents for VistaCare Communications and its subsidiaries; notifies customers of incidents on relevant work sites if required
  • Ensures that incident reporting protocols are completed sufficiently and in a timely manner; ensures that all medical and lost time injuries are properly reported to Workers Compensation
  • Investigates incidents as required (ie. Severity)
  • Documents and follows up on any outstanding issues pertaining to site inspections or visits from OH&S or Labour representatives with the assistance of the Safety Officer when required
  • Tracks and monitors WCB claims and employees requiring time off due to injury; coordinates modified work duties with management groups when necessary to mitigate loss time claims
  • Liaisons with WCB Case Managers and other health care personnel as needed regarding employee recovery and physiotherapy progress etc.
Knowledge and Skills: 
  • Proven ability to build strong working relationships, internal and external to the organization
  • High level of computer literacy; advanced proficiency with Microsoft suite of software, specifically Excel
  • Self-starter with a high degree of initiative; flexible team player
  • Ability to manage stress and to work through problems tactfully and timely
  • Attention to detail in all areas of work
Experience Required: 
  • 2+ years of related experience in a Safety role and/or diploma or degree in related field
  • Experience in Construction and/or Telecommunication Industry as an asset
  • Self-starter with a high degree of initiative; flexible team player
Additional Requirements: 
  • Valid driver’s license and reasonable driver abstract
  • Willingness to travel on occasion
  • Ability to work in a high energy, fast-paced work environment
  • The successful candidate will be required to pass a criminal record check
